We are moving ahead in our efforts to obtain the 'Implied Dedication For Public Use Easement.' Our attorney Stephen Jones is taking care of some final details before filing the suit. In the meantime there are many who wish that the city or the state would simply move in and purchase the land for the Conservancy so that this land can be enjoyed by all 'in perpetuity.' I met a man on the trail today who said that he was a friend of Mohamed Hadid's and that he believed that Mr. Hadid would be agreeable to selling the land and possibly even taking a loss as it could work for him as a huge tax write off. He also said that the city and state have plenty of money to purchase this land for the people and that they had an obligation to do that. I personally have no clue about the availability of money from the city and state although I do know that there are organizations out there that purchase land like this that needs saving. With this in mind, those who want to save this trail and canyon from development can help in the following ways:
.) Contact Congressman Howard Berman. His contact information is on the site and his office has expressed interest in helping us. Let's find out if there is money to purchase the land. Also contact Paul Koretz. This canyon is in his district.
.) Contact any agencies that you know of or have connections with (Sierra Club etc.) and ask if they will help purchase the land for the Conservancy.
.) Help us in our search for more 'legacy' hikers. This means those who have hiked the trail since the mid 60's. They need no longer be hiking. What is important is that they did hike for any 5 years prior to 1972. Photos and written records, letters, references to the time that the trail was hiked are helpful.
.) Donate. Of the 600 plus who have signed on in support of saving the trails, about 36 have contributed. Individuals have contributed from $20.00 to $1,000.00 and these donations are what have enabled us to pursue our case for an easement that will save these trails. So please, if you have not donated yet, do now. No amount is too small. We have reached 1/4 of our goal to date.
